Maila Travaini August 25, 2013 Psychodynamic Approaches Comparison Essay In the counseling world today understanding psychodynamic approaches is more crucial than ever in the assessment and treatment of any psychological issue. Psychodynamic approaches such as Individual therapy, analytical therapy and psychoanalysis are similar in many ways but also differ based on the individuals own perception and circumstances. I will discuss the similarities as well difference’s and why these forms of therapy are critical in the assessment and treatment of clients. Individual therapy is what most think of as laying on a couch and talking to a counselor as they doodle pictures and let the client come to their own conclusions. In a way this†¦show more content†¦Such a dialogue, said Jung, would foster the â€Å"mutual commitment and care that occurs between healer and the healed† as the client explores unknown parts of self in his or her attempt to heal the soul.† Analytical therapy uses techniques that allow the client to make leaps towards self-actualization and recognition of occurrences that cause setback’s in the clients life.† Psychoanalysis created by Sigmund Freud is much like Individual therapy in the sense that it will explore the past and how any past circumstances are effecting the now adult. This therapy will last as long as the client needs the support of the counselor and relies on the client’s full participation. In this form of therapy the counselor will participate in guiding the client thru the unconscious mind to and find how it may be contributing to thoughts and behaviors that are causing the client distress. Like analytical therapy psychoanalysis will cover a variety of issues including psychosexual, compulsive, and depressive disorders. According to Haggerty, J. Seamus Heaneys When all the Others and Robert Haydens Those Winter Sundays Essay I found the work on these poems quite interesting, as the topic they covered, child/parent relationships is something we can all relate to as it is something we all have, or wish we have. I have never read any poem by either of these two poets, even though Seamus Heaney is quite a well known local poet. Both of these poems are quite memorable and well written. Both poems have a lot of feeling and both seem to seem like they are based on the poets true feelings towards the parent he was writing about in the poem. Seamus Heaney is a local poet, born in 1939 on a small farm in County Derry. At the age of twelve he was awarded a scholarship to St. Columbs College in Derry. He went on to Queens University. The first verses he wrote was when he was a young teacher. Years later in 1995, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature and in 1996, he was made a Commandeur de LOrdre des Arts et Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. When all the Others is a poem written by Seamus Heaney about a memory of his mother that he found special and still remembers to this day. The poem is titled When all the Others as it is the beginning of the poem. The poem is laid out as a Sonnet and in the octave the memory is told, and in the sestet the theme is developed and the poem jumps forward to the death of his mother. The octave and sestet are connected closely as in the octave we learn of a memory he had where he felt close to his mother and in the sestet we learn that had been the closest to his mother he had been and I believe that by writing of her death, he is telling us how special he finds that memory, even though it is so simple it can be written in eight lines. The memory he tells us isnt something I would find special as it is about peeling potatoes with his mother. However, as you read it you realise he finds special the fact they were working together, and even though not a word is said you can tell he believes he and his mother bonded more in that one simple task than they had ever done. Throughout the poem there is a linking of sound with the last word of the first line and the last word on the second line. It becomes more accurate in the sestet. In the first two lines of the octave the events of Heaneys memory are established; we learn that the rest of his family were away at mass and that he was all hers as they peeled potatoes. The alliteration here could have been used to draw attention onto what he and his mother were doing. The words all hers give us a good idea of how he felt about the situation; that he was delighted to be alone with his mother. On the third line we learn that he and his mother werent speaking (as the falling of the potatoes broke the silence). One by one could be there to emphasise how the chore is repetitive. The fourth line seems out of place and could of simply been added so weeping was there which could been a link to the sestet. Alliteration is used again here on cold comforts. This I believe means that he and his mother had some comfort in that each one of them were doing the same cold task. The end of line five gives us another insight into how he felt about this chore; he was sharing the memories with his mother. Describing the splashes as pleasant in the sixth line could be Heaneys way of putting his mood and feelings into the poem. The ending of the octave could mean that as the work went on, they became more aware of each other. The fact he mentions the Priest could possibly be a link to the octave and the fact he and his mother only had that time together because the rest of his family was at Mass listening to a priest. The eleventh to thirteenth lines tell us that he neither responded to the priest nor cried instead he recalled the memory he wrote about in the octave. The last line; never closer the whole rest of our lives makes it clear to us that he never felt more close to his mother than he had while peeling the potatoes with her all those years ago. I found this poem quite moving in a sense it is a grown man writing down the memory in which he was the most intimate with his mother, the parent many of us are the most closest to. I also think he was quite brave to publish this poem as the memory is quite personal to him, Robert Hayden was an African American poet who grew up in a Detroit ghetto which must be where the memories from his poem came from. The strange thing is Hayden didnt live with his family but instead a foster family who lived next door. He finished school in 1932 and got into Detroit City College through a scholarship. He enrolled for an English Literature masters in 1941 and graduated in 1942. He went on to teach until 1969. Those Winter Sundays is quite a depressing poem. It tells us of Haydens father who self sacrificed his day off and went through pain to get up early and light the fire for his family, yet he was never thanked for it. It goes onto tell us hed wake his family only when the rooms were warm. Hayden does mention once a reason as to possibly why he never thanked him in the line fearing the chronic angers. So it could possibly be he never thanked his father and spoke indifferently to him as he was scared of being shouted at or worse. Whats worse is how the poem ends, with Hayden realising his father showed the love for him through getting up early and polishing his shoes for him, but now it is too late to thank him. Also even though it doesnt exactly keep to all the traditional rules of a sonnet e. g. having an octave and a sestet, but it is one as it is fourteen lines long and tries to keep each line ten syllables long. The first two lines of Those Winter Sundays simply set the scene. That his father got up early every day including Sundays and got ready to face the blueblack cold. This adjective is there to describe the darkness of the morning. The third and forth lines of the poem tells us that he had a manual labour job during the week that was out side as the weather cracked his hands. Cracked and ached have a rhyme to them that could be there to stress the pain his father was in. The last line tells us what his father was getting up for; to make banked fires blaze. Alliteration is used here to make the task his father done stand out. He got up early to make the house warm for his family. The ending of the first stanza has a shock to it; no one ever thanked him even though throughout it Hayden has been writing of the trouble his father went to. In the next stanza, he focuses on that Sunday, and how he awoke to hear the fire that was part of his fathers routine mentioned in the first stanza. The last two lines of the stanza have yet another surprise ending but may explain the ending of the first stanza. The ending here could explain why he lived with a foster family later on, that anger in the house is as part of the routine as the fire itself. The chronic angers mentioned here are not built on, so we dont know what has been happening. The beginning of the third stanza seems to point at the father as being the cause of the chronic angers as Hayden spoke indifferently to him even though we have learnt of the trouble his father has gone to for him and his family. Through out the poem there is a sense of the house slowly heating, from the fire being light to the cold splintering breaking. That ends on the tenth line; the man who had driven out the cold. We then go onto hear about extra trouble his father had gone to for him; in the line and polished my good shoes as well. The final two lines there is a feeling of regret on Haydens part. What did I know, what did I know of loves austere and lonely offices? This rhetorical question seems like Hayden is pleading he knew of how love doesnt have to be expressed as emotionally as it often is. It was only now that when he was older and his father was dead that he realised that his father didnt have to go to the trouble of lighting the fire and polishing his shoes, these acts were out of love for his son and family. Before this assignment I have never had to look at poems in such a detailed manner before and I have only realised now at how much work is put into poems and that many have hidden meanings and allegories in them. Of the two poems I have looked at my favourite has to be When all the Others by Seamus Heaney as it is more uplifting while Those Winter Sundays as Robert Hayden ends his poem with regret and remorse. I also prefer the poem by Heaney simply for the story it tells. Although I found both poems moving for the different messages each one contained. Both poems however make me realise that the time I have with my parents is special and when I can, I should make the most of it.

Radon Radon is earth's only naturally produced radioactive gas. It comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. Radon has no odor, no taste, and can not be seen. When it comes indoors it can become a health hazard. Radon can enter your house through cracks and openings in the foundation, floor, and walls. Radon decays and is inhaled into the lungs. The energy released can damage the DNA in lungs and can cause cancer. I think that a law making it illegal to sell a home containing radon in the basement would be a good idea. Radon is estimated to cause thousands of cancer deaths each year in the US. On a graph I saw on the Internet there was the amounts of deaths in drunk driving, radon, drowning, fires, and air planes crashes. Radon had the second highest amount of deaths a year, right after drunk driving. The Surgeon General has a warning that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US today. The only way you can detect that you have radon coming into your house is by testing it. EPA and Surgeon General recommend testing all homes below the third floor for radon. If radon is found in your home it can be fixed. Nearly one out of every fifteen homes in the US is estimated to have high radon levels. High radon levels have been found in every state. The levels of radon can vary widely from homes in the same neighborhood. The average person in the US gets more radiation dose from the exposure to indoor radon than from any other source of natural or man made radiation, according to the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements. Radon is classified as a Class A human cancinogen. Many underground miners have cancer or end up with cancer. This is from the close exposure to radon. The EPA action level of radon is 4pCi/L. that are belived to be the same exposure to radon as miners. The National Cancer Institute believes that 10% of lung cancer deaths in the US could be due to indoor radon exposure. Information on radon causing cancer comes from molecular, cellular, animal, and human studies. Women (from studies) have shown to have a slightly lower risk than men. This may be because both sexes have diferent lung dosimentry. Children have shown to have a higher risk because their lungs are still growning and are not as strong in resisting smoke and radon. Because of this dangerous radon children are becoming more prone to cancer, and they can't even prevent it at such a young age. I believe that this law is a very good idea. Radon has made (our homes) something that is supposed to be the safest place, a place that we could be exposing ourselfs to radiation. If the law is passed, I assume insurance would pay for the inspection. If the law is not passed, then I think everyone should consider installing a radon resistant feature. These cost about $800-$2,500, which I think is a reasonable price for your life or the life of loved ones. Even if (when the law is passed) the inspectors only detect radon in one house in the city, that is one life, or one family you might have saved. I think that passing a law making it illegal to sell a home with radon in it is a good idea, and should be practiced throughout the state. Science

The structural compartmentation of mammalian cells and the differing functions of these compartments. All mammals are eukaryotes and therefore have eukaryotic cells. These cells contain several organelles suited to a specific function they carry out within the cell. These eukaryotic cells contain a Nucleus, Mitochondria, Ribosomes, Rough and Smooth endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and various other organelles. Most of the organelles are separated from each other by a membrane, these membranes are based on lipid bilayers that are similar to each other.The organelles membrane is there to keep the contents of each organelle separate from the rest of this cell. The membrane consists of a lipid bilayer that may have channels in order to allow the transport of specific molecules which are needed somewhere else in the cell. The mitochondrion consists of an outer and inner membrane composed of phospholipid bilayers. The inner membrane contains several folding’s forming a structure known as cristae. The cristae increase the surface area of the mitochondria allowing more ATP to be produced. The part enclosed by the inner membrane is the matrix. This matrix contains most of the mitochondria’s proteins. The matrix contains several enzymes needed to synthesise ATP. The ATP produced in the mitochondria is transported to other parts of the cell that require energy.The ribosome is an important organelle for protein synthesis, it is the site at which the genetic code is conv erted into protein molecules. It is responsible for a process called translation which converts mRNA into an amino acid chain. The mRNA determine the order of the tRNA molecules that bind to the codons. The order of these tRNA molecule ultimately decide the amino acid chain that will be produced and hence the protein being produced. The proteins produced detatch themselves from the ribosome and move to other parts of the cell where they are needed.The ribosome is very large composed of many molecules including RNA and proteins. The ribosome is composed of two sub-units, a larger one and a smaller one, each of which have distinct shapes. As protein synthesis is very important to cells there are usually large numbers of ribosomes found throughout a cell. Ribosomes are usually found floating freely around the cell however they are sometimes found bound to the endoplasmic reticulum. The endoplasmic reticulum is the transport network for molecules. It is made up of several tubes and sacs .The space inside of the endoplasmic reticulum is the lumen. The function of the endoplasmic reticulum depends on the cell type. It is comprised of a rough endoplasmic reticulum and a smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The Rough endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes attached to its surface which is what causes it to be rough. â€Å"The membrane of the rough endoplasmic reticulum forms large double membrane sheets that are located near, and continuous with the outer layer of the  nuclear envelope†[1]. Proteins are synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum.The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for synthesizing lipids, metabolizing carbohydrates and regulating calcium levels. Lysosomes are also found in most eukaryotic cells. They contain several digestive enzymes used to break down worn out cellular components and bacteria. Lysosomes are highly packed spherical vacuoles but have a large variation in size depending on the materials they have taken up for digestion. The lysosome removes any unwanted material inside the cell by secreting these digestive enzymes onto them. Lysosomes protect the cell from foreign bacteria which could be harmful.They operate in a low PH which is maintained by a membrane around the lysosome, this reduces the risk of the enzymes digesting their own cell. The Golgi apparatus packages proteins inside the cell and are then sent to their destination. The Golgi apparatus is found within the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. It is composed of stacks known as cisternae. â€Å"The Golgi apparatus is integral in modifying, sorting and packaging these macromolecules for cell secretion†[2]. As always, you want to state your opinion explicitly in your thesis statement (of course, without saying, â€Å"I think that. . . .†). As always, you also want to pick a topic that is fairly focused, narrow, and specific: pick a topic that you can adequately discuss in four to five paragraphs. I will say it again: it is always better to say a lot about a small topic than to try to say a little bit about many aspects of a large topic. (For those who are counting, that is the 3,248th time I have said that thi s year.) Use the first paragraph to state and fully explain your thesis. The rest of your essay should then be the marshalling of evidence in support of your thesis statement and an explanation of and commentary on your evidence. Facts are necessary to support your thesis, but by themselves facts are not enough. You need to explain and comment on them fully; show how these facts support your view and not the view of the opposing side. Try to find three or four really strong pieces of evidence to support your opinion. There is no way you can say everything or think of every point; choose the strongest evidence you can. While arguing in favor of your position, you should also include arguments against the opposing view. For example, if I am writing about the wrongness of capital punishment, I should also include arguments showing the wrongness of arguments made in favor capital punishment. Try to anticipate the other side’s arguments. That will show you are thinking and will also strengthen your argument. In general, it is best to work from your weakest to your strongest argument. As usual, conclusions are difficult. End with a strong, powerful concluding paragraph that brings together your various ideas but does not merely restate them. Certainly do not end by saying something like, â€Å"For all these reasons . . . .† I have listed below a few sample thesis statements and a number of possible topics. Please do not be  limited by my suggestions. As with any piece of writing, you will do the best job if you write about something you care about. I will give you a sample essay. A vegetarian diet is a sensible and meaningful response to world starvation and environmental destruction. So many Americans are often caught up with finding the â€Å"perfect† diet. While such a diet does not exist, a vegetarian diet provides significant health, environmental, and political benefits. Choosing such a diet is a simple but significant way to make a real difference in one’s own life and the world. First of all, a vegetarian diet is far more healthful than the traditional  American diet that emphasizes meat. A meat-free diet is higher in fiber, lower in saturated fat, and richer in a wide range of vitamins and minerals than a meat-based one. While we do hear conflicting evidence about the various health claims of different diets, nutritionists and scientists seem to agree that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides the greatest health benefits. Some people might say that a vegetarian diet is boring: quite the contrary. Compared to the relatively few kinds of meats and ways to prepare them, there are scores of vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes and almost countless ways to prepare them. A meat-based diet also puts far too much protein into the body, taxing the kidneys and wasting expensive food. As it is, Americans eat too much protein; eating a vegetarian diet is one way to reduce our intake of excessive and expensive protein. Eating a diet based on fruits and vegetables also creates less environmental havoc than a meat-based diet. Raising the animals necessary for the traditional meat-laden diet requires large amounts of land, mountains of processed feed, and the disposal of tons of waste. But a family of four could, if necessary, live for a year off the fruits, grains, and vegetables produced from a few acres of land. And, once the crop is taken, there are few or no ill effects. If the agriculture is done organically, vegetarian eating has even fewer harmful effects upon the land. In an age of diminishing arable land and resources and increasing populations, we need to find ways to get the most nutrition from our land use. A vegetarian diet provides such efficiency. Finally, a meat-rich diet consumes many more scarce resources than a vegetarian diet. It takes about 800 pounds of cattle feed to produce one pound of beef. In a world in which nearly one-fourth of the planet’s population is malnourished or starving, a meat-based diet is simply a luxury we can no longer afford (if we ever could have). In good conscience, it only makes sense to eat lower on the food chain – as we do with a plant-based diet. If everyone in the world ate a vegetarian diet, there would be an immediate surplus of food available to feed people at far lower cost and with wiser use of precious resources. In this way, vegetarianism becomes a moral choice. For reasons of politics, environment, health, and justice, vegetarianism is the only intelligent and compassionate choice in a world of scarce resources and increasing population.
